Back to School Clothes Savings! Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe Fall Sale (GIVEAWAY)

As a mama of 2 school aged kids, fall gets me seeing dollar signs. BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING. Oy. Do you love it, or hate it? I love it for the organization and freshness of all things new. New pencils, new notebooks, rolling into my favorite season of the year, and the excitement that my kids have in picking out their school supplies.

...And yet, it's still quite pricey, even when you catch a break with some of the BTS sales! Don't get me started on back to school clothes and their prices. Luckily I am a deal hound and have zero qualms about buying children's clothes, toys and accessories second hand. Let's face it, most of the clothes that our children wear will not be used for a very long because kids grow so quickly! I love to shop around to find the best deals and I've found be best bargains and quality of used children's items at Just Between Friends sales.

Just Between Friends is a nationwide consignment event that takes place several times per year, typically in the fall and spring. You can find Just Between Friends of Everett-Monroe twice a year at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, WA.

At "JBF" you'll find everything you need for maternity, baby and child through teen. Local families consign their gently used and new items for 50-90% off retail prices and it's all conveniently located in one location for a weekend long sale. It's my favorite place to shop because I can get everything they need for each season for literally a fraction of the price of what I'd pay at the store, in one fell swoop. It makes financial and ecological sense to buy used.

Spring time! Just Between Friends of Everett- Monroe consignment sale!

Just Between Friends of Everett-Monroe Spring Sale

Evergreen State Fairgrounds, Monroe WA

April 4-7 2018

Spring is right around the corner.. I feel it guys. Because we don't have very many frosty mornings, the sky broke and I saw BLUE, the sun shone down upon me and I started gardening. Yes, spring is coming. It's not here yet, but it's coming soon.

During the winter I totally forgo any kind of deep cleaning outdoors. I snuggle up in my cozy robe at home or scarves and sweaters when we go out and I kind of forget about the general status of my property. The fruit trees are sleeping, dreaming of blooming and bearing delicious fruit, I tuck away my excitement (and anxiety) in growing a vegetable garden and my chickens also take a much deserved break from laying eggs for a little while.

Then March hits, and as I said; the sun shines and this mama gets BUSY. Now that I've got 3 kids, you can imagine my busyness but also how much stuff can accumulate within the home while I allow things to lay dormant during the dark winter months. We spend a lot of time indoors and also pass through Christmas time and my two daughters' birthdays. A lot of stuff is laying around and when I get that spring cleaning bug, I'm going through it ALL.

Kids grow fast and you can bet that almost every season there is turn over from clothes that don't fit, won't make it as a handmedown or likely won't fit the next year when this season rolls around. Toys are left forgotten, no longer interesting or the mind has outgrown it. So as spring rolls in, I begin my semiannual fleshing out of all the things. And I get ready for Just Between Friends.

Just Between Friends consignment sales are a weekend long event that allow local families to consign their baby through teen and maternity clothing and items. It's a win-win for both consignors and shoppers! As a shopper, you have an enormous amount of variety in clothing, toys and gear to choose from at really fair prices. For the family that has items that are ready to move on; consigning is a great way to get rid of that stuff and also get a good return! I've been a shopper for almost 6 years and a consignor for 4 and I have found that most of the time I break even between what I sell and what I buy for the coming season. That's awesome!

At this coming Spring Sale you'll notice a familiar face running the show - Tasha Johnson, who has been a huge resource to consignors and shoppers alike, is now the new owner of JBF Everett-Monroe! Tasha has been a part of the JBF Everett-Monroe event for as long as I can remember and is a wonderful gal to get to know. And she'll teach you more than a thing or two about selling/buying kid stuff! She's the perfect person to move this JBF event onto the next phase; even though our beloved Eunice (the previous owner) will be greatly missed. Be sure to say hi to Tasha if you see her!

I'm excited to continue my partnership with Tasha and JBF Everett-Monroe! She is offering Pierogie Mama readers the chance to win one of three $25 JBF Bucks for this Spring event! Check out the giveaway widget below for your chance to win.

Sneak Peek: JBF Everett - Monroe Fall 2017 Sale!

As you know, The Pierogie Mama loves her some Just Between Friends (JBF) sales and today I made the trek from Skagit County down to Monroe for the Just Between Friends of Everett - Monroe sale at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe.  I lived in Monroe until last year and part of my heart still lives with the community, and I also know where to find a good sale! Friends, I drove over an hour to go. This one is good!!

Just Between Friends is a nationwide consignment event that takes place several times per year, typically in the fall and spring.  At "JBF" you'll find everything you need for maternity, baby and child through teen. Local families consign their gently used and new items for 50-90% off retail prices. It's my favorite place to shop because I can get everything they need for each season for literally a fraction of the price of what I'd pay at the store. Not to mention, children outgrow clothes so quickly that it makes financial and ecological sense to buy used.

Today I got to shop at the pre-sale event (find out how you can shop early for the next sale!), which got me in the door before the public sale opens tomorrow. Consigning and volunteering is where it's at! But don't despair, there is SO MUCH inventory at this sale that there are thousands of amazing finds waiting for shoppers through this weekend.

This is one of my favorite games to play with myself - how much did I pay? The approximate retail value of this lot is $263, I'll post the answer at the bottom of the post!

Here's some snaps of what I found today.

Can I just pause for a minute and say THANK YOU EUNICE (the owner of JBF Everett - Monroe) to have a designated space where you can unload everything that you've found, lay it out and decide what you'd like to keep and price check? I pulled out probably a dozen pairs of leggings from the racks and was able to set them out to get a better look at prints, compare sizing and prices before whittling down to how many I wanted to take home with me. This scatter brained mama thanks you!

This isn't me, this is my friend Monica :) She is a proud mom of twin boys and it was her first JBF sale! When she came home she sent me a text that said "Man I got so much stuff. I spent 145 dollars and I got 9 pairs of shoes, 1 rain jacket, 3 hoodies, 2 nice sweaters, 3 sweats, 5 long sleeved tops, 6 jammies, 1 button up, 5 books, a gallon sized bag of hot wheels and 6 plastic dinosaurs. I think I did okay!" Yes Monica, YES YOU DID!!

This is a great sale to stock up on holiday jammies and outfits!

All kinds of strollers - I saw quite a few double strollers at this sale.

Babywearing! Did you know that JBF inspects most items for safety and recalls?

Not only can you find gear and clothes for every age, but toys are a huge part of what families are consigning too!

And there you have it, my friends! Be sure to head out to the sale today through September 16th. You can find all of the details at http://everett.jbfsale.com/ and on their facebook

Answer from the first picture on the blog: I paid $116 for 13 items! The baby swing was $45, and brand new they retail for over $100!

Just Between Friends of Everett / Monroe Fall 2017 Sale (Giveaway)

This is my first year of having a full time school aged child!!! Ahhh!! Penny is starting her first year of kindergarten, after having done a year of 2 day pre-school. Preparations for yet another big life change of the summer (right behind the birth of our third child!) have been in full swing for the month of August.

As I go through my own personal list of fall seasonal items that my kids will need and thinking ahead for the school year all I think of how much all of this back to school business costs! And this is for a kindergartener who doesn't really have an extensive class room supply list and she doesn't need a ton of clothes. So this idea intrigued me and I set out to run an informal survey in one of my local mama facebook groups to see how much other local families spent on back to school clothes.  Of the 60 mamas responded, the vast majority spend $250 or less per child, though a remarkable amount spend $500 per child as well. When you add in all the other things you need to buy for the start of the school year, like classroom supplies and electronics), it skyrockets so fast!

If you're like me, I'm always looking to save money where we can and my kids clothes are still very much a large part of our budget where we can cut corners. Having two daughters, two years apart helps in the handmedowns department and they both are pretty gentle on their stuff. But even so, they are still growing out of them quickly. I stretch our dollars even further by purchasing their clothes through Just Between Friends consignment sales - which have saved me boku bucks over the last 5 years that I've been shopping at these events!

What is Just Between Friends, you ask? "JBF" is a pop up consignment sale that occurs nationally and there happens to be one in Monroe, WA just in time for back to school!

You can find anything you need for back to school shopping at these events. Local families consign their gently used baby, kids and maternity items for up to 70% off the retail price. Each of the items is hand inspected to make sure it meets the high standards of JBF, so you can rest assured that these clothes will look brand-spankin-new (in some cases there are still tags on them) and not have to pay full retail. You'll find clothes, shoes, sports gear, toys, baby gear, books, dvds, kid related furniture, and seriously so much more. Each time I've shopped I've been able to fill my girls' closets with the upcoming size and season needs as well as a surprise or two. So don't miss out!

The best part? I've been an ongoing partner for Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe and am sharing some awesome prizes for Pierogie Mama readers in preparation for the upcoming JBF Everett/Monroe Fall 2017 sales event! Remember to check back daily because there are a few daily entry options that you can do in order to increase your odds of winning! And stay tuned for September 13 when I come back to let you know what I found when I went shopping - it's always fun to do the math and compare how much I paid versus how much I could have paid in retail!

Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe consignment Spring sale!

Good morning, Snohomish County friends!

Each Spring and Fall I get a little bit of an extra buzz because it's that time of year where I do most of my kids clothing shopping. And I don't despair because to outfit 2 growing girls it is literally a steal to do my shopping at Just Between Friends consignment sales! Let me tell you why -

I've gotten this shopping thing down to a science. I go through my girls' clothes a few weeks before to see where we stand on the condition of our standard options - leggings, sweat shirts, t shirts and long sleeves. I set aside what my 3 year old has grown out of; deciding if the clothing item is acceptable to consign or if it can be donated or passed on to a friend. I store my 5 year old's outgrown clothing for a season so that her little sister can grow into it a little. Then I inventory where are the gaps that we need to fill and what we may need for the upcoming season.

With that little list in hand, I head over to the JBF shopping venue and am able to look through the well organized racks of clothing for the cutest and best deals.  Eunice, the owner of JBF Everett/Monroe and her team, are sticklers for making sure all of the consigned items are in excellent used condition - it's rare to find any items that have even the lightest little grease stain on them. The prices are extremely fair and the best part is - it's a local family who consigns those clothes so your purchases are literally helping a neighbor.

Have you ever heard of what is affectionately called "JBF"? It's a bi-annual sale held across the country where you can shop for family related consignment items - the most popular items being baby and kid clothes, though you can find anything from nursery furniture, babywearing gear, cloth diapers, maternity & teen clothes, movies, games, and so much more.

Over the last 5 years I've been to over a dozen JBF sales throughout the North Cascades region and I've snagged so many awesome deals! Here's a snippet of what you can find at a JBF sale.

Even my kids know what it means when we go JBF shopping!

As an ongoing relationship with JBF Everett/Monroe, I am so excited to get to share another awesome giveaway from Eunice and her team! I've got three prizes - $25 JBF bucks to spend at the sale or two prime time tickets (valued at $10 each) to get in before the public! Check out the giveaway widget below.

Just Between Friends of Everett-Monroe Fall 2016 Consignment Sale {Giveaway}

This is my first year of Back to School shopping. My oldest is now a pre-schooler.

How. Did. Life. Move. So. Fast??!!!

I've seen a ton of Facebook posts about parents who are scrambling through the department stores, seemingly run over by other Back to School parents, trying to get great deals on clothes but also hassling with sold out sizes. Even though Penny starts school in mid-September, I'm sitting back and waiting because...

JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS IS COMING, DUH!

Why?

Just Between Friends consignment sales are an awesome place to find a huge variety of clothes, at truly affordable prices. I've been shopping at these sales, which happen 2-3 times per year, and spend less than $100 on clothes, books and to and it all lasts me through the next season. Here are a few examples of what I've bought at previous sales, with their retail values:

Estimated retail: $149.06

Really, can you go wrong with ANY of that?? It's pretty spectacular!

Just Between Friends is a nationwide consignment event that takes place several times per year, typically in the fall and spring. Just Between Friends of Everett-Monroe also holds a third sale at Everett Community College in the summer!

How many outfits does your kid need? {Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe Giveaway}

I recently asked online "How many outfits / clothing items are necessary for children? How many shirts, pants, shoes, jackets, special occasion outfits do you try to have per season?"
My hands down favorite answer came from a friend;

"When it's time to get dressed - never enough.  When's it laundry time - too many."
Truer words have never been spoken!!

But in all seriousness, it's really hard to balance between enough clothes versus feeling like you're prepared for anything. I personally have a ton of totes packed away from Penny, expecting to be able to use them on my second daughter Ruby, but Ruby hasn't even gone through half of them because of their size difference. Because I hate the look of overstuffed drawers so much is just sitting in storage for a someday baby.

But, if you've followed The Pierogie Mama for a couple years you know that I've been cashing in on Just Between Friends consignment sales for purchasing the clothes that we're needing for the following season and consigning the clothes and toys that we are done with.

So what did my sample of moms respond with what is their perfect balance of "just enough" clothes to get their child through a season?

  • 7-10 shirts
  • 3-4 pairs of paints
  • 2 dressy outfits
  • 5 pajamas
  • 2 weeks worth of underwear and socks
  • Seasonal items: one rain jacket, one warm winter jacket, a couple pairs of swim suits, a pair of sandals and sneakers.
It can seem really hard to limit clothes, especially when the outfits are so cute! But considering the cost of brand new clothes and how quickly children outgrow them it doesn't make sense to have a huge investment in tons of different outfits once your child has outgrown the super messy stage. Babies are an exception because pukes and blowouts can happen at any moment and I've been there when it's outfit change #7 of the day!

This fall I've been taking a close look at what clothing items we have for the girls to last us through the rest of the year. I've still got a ton of items left over from Penny that were meant to be passed down to Ruby; more than she will ever wear. Mason Jar Values, another local blogging mama, shared her ingenious way to give the perfect balance of how to organize her children's handmedowns

"Once sorted, if they don’t fit in the drawers, we don’t keep them, passing on the goodness."
-Rachel, Mason Jar Values

So smart! I utilized this idea and now we have neatly organized drawers and I've set aside two piles - clothes to pass on to friends and clothes to consign.

This Fall, just like you'll find me several times per year, I'm shopping at the upcoming Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroconsignment event for babies, children and maternity. I love shopping there to fill in those gaps for the upcoming size for Penny and where I don't have quite enough for Ruby. In sales past I have saved as much as 72% off retail on my whole purchase! That is huge when you are buying clothes for each season!

I also encourage you to go through your stock pile of clothes that you might be saving for your "someday baby" and glean out the outfits that you may not use again or bring down the quantity. Consigning with JBF is totally worth it because you get 60-75% in return for your consigned items, which is a lot more than many other consignment options. I've consigned 3 times and each sale I bring home at least a couple hundred dollars. The process is also very streamlined; so once you get your items tagged ahead of time it is about 30 minutes to drop off your items and about the same amount of time to pick them up at the end of the sale.

So mark your calendars for the upcoming JBF Everett/Monroe Fall Sale Event, and keep scrolling down because I have another surprise for you...

Why Is Supporting Cancer Research Important to Me? Eunice's Story

At the start of July I made the commitment to raise $500 to benefit cancer research through the Jimmy Fund Walk and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In less than 5 weeks I had exceeded my goal and am now on the way to raise an additional $250 (bringing the total goal up to $750)! Fundraising for Jimmy Fund Walk has been a personal journey as my own dad was treated for cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and I'm honored when a few of my friends stepped up to share their story on why supporting cancer research is important to them. Today I am honored to welcome Eunice as she shares about her relationship with her father-in-law and the alternative treatments that he explored, just like my dad did. Eunice is the owner of Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe, a local consignment event for kids and maternity - keep an eye out in the coming weeks for an announcement for their upcoming fall sale! We are still looking for donations to reach our new and improved goal -
please consider pledging $5 or more! Donate here

My life was touched by cancer through my father-in-law, Diony V. Corsilles. I was fortunate enough to know him fairly early in my life - when I was 18 years old when my husband and I were freshman in college and just started dating. He was a very compassionate man who had spent his life advocating for the rights of others through his work for the state and I was immediately embraced by him. He eventually became a father to me as well as our relationship grew.

My father-in-law was initially diagnosed with liver cancer while my husband was studying to become a Naturopathic Physician at Bastyr University. Although he had surgery to remove the cancerous portions of his liver, the cancer returned shortly after and then spread throughout his body. His Oncologist gave him only a 2-3 months prognosis with no real treatment options except for pain medications to help with his comfort as the cancer progressed. During his studies, my husband learned about the benefits of natural medicine and encouraged my father-in-law to apply these treatment options to his treatment plan.

My father-in-law sought additional care from a Chinese Medicine Doctor and a Naturopathic Physician. He drank soups made from Chinese herbs, freshly juiced organic fruits and vegetables daily to support his liver and immune system, and took supplements which slowed his cancer progression and relieved his pain from it. The simple act of helping him feel better emotionally and physically through these treatments gave him the hope and strength to continue on. Because of these "non-traditional" forms of treatment, his life was extended for another two and a half years compared to the 2-3 month prognosis he was originally given. This allowed our family the much valued time to spend with him before his passing almost exactly 14 years ago (August 21, 2001) and helped us all find closure.

In addition to my work with families through Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe, I work in the healthcare industry as a Physical Therapist and have worked with many cancer patients to regain their strength to return home after receiving treatment in the hospital. The traditional cancer treatments of radiation and chemotherapy are so hard on patients and many suffer more from the side effects of the treatments than from the actual cancer. I can see a practical application of natural/holistic cancer care for patients and the need for more research in this area. Many of my patients have shared their stories with me over the years and I feel it's important for me to continue to share these inspiring stories to bring hope and healing to others as well as support cancer research to prevent other families from having to go through this unfortunate process. There is so much fear around the topic of cancer and the more we can share and learn, the less fearful and uncertain this disease will be.

A couple times a year you'll find Eunice heading up my favorite shopping events - Just Between Friends! With event locations in both Everett and my town of Monroe, you can shop for everything under the sun for birth through teens and maternity for mama. The Pierogie Mama + JBF Everett/Monroe are like peanut butter and jelly, so keep an eye out in a couple weeks for a pre-sale passes and JBF bucks giveaway! The Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe Summer event is here!

A few weeks ago I introduced Eunice Gong, the owner of Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe, and tonight I am super excited to share with you what I snagged at her first summer event! Not sure what "Just Between Friends" aka "JBF" is? It's a maternity and children's consignment sale that happens all across North America, and I'm a pretty big fan of it! I've been shopping at Eunice's JBF sale for 3 years and have save literally thousands of dollars on clothing and gear for my kids.

Each time that I shop at a JBF event, I like to share what I snagged because not only am I super proud of the awesome deals I got, but I also want to encourage you to check it out too! So without further adieu....

Let me just lay that out in the open. 15 items, $77.53 total. An average of $4.73 per item! The most expensive item that I bought was a $12 Disney store brand sweat shirt for Penny, and the least expensive was a whopping dollar for a cute Ariel placemat.

Not a bad haul for the essentials, right?
As I mentioned before, this is the first summer sale that JBF Everett/Monroe has put on, and it's also the first time that they've held it at Everett Community College. Normally it's at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, so I was interested to see how the new venue and location would affect the sale. Many consignors and shoppers are willing to drive a bit to check out each of the several JBF sales in the Seattle area, and this opened up an opportunity for the greater Everett area families to consign and shop as well.

Both of my kids accompanied me while I shopped and I totally had a laugh at this experience. Penny is now very much at the age where she wants to do what I do and also has a very quickly growing opinion on things. So while I was perusing the racks for Penny's size (and thinking ahead in the next year), I would hold up an item against her to see if the length was about right. She would be very quick to veto or pass on the item based on it's cuteness factor (we are talking about a 3 year old, after all). Some items were the right size but didn't fit her whimsy. She quickly learned this game and started pulling items out of the racks that she thought were nice and would hold them against herself. Regardless of whether they really were going to fit or not, she would say "hmm, yes, I think this will fit after all."
Ruby also quickly learned a new game. It was called "chase after Penny, pull down random items from the racks and shove them into Mama's shopping bag while she wasn't looking."
With that being said, I think that I still made off with a ton of awesome finds!
If you want to see what else you can find at the Just Between Friends of Everett/Monroe, check me out on instagram!
